Custom Home Trends: the Decline of the Living Room

If you have tuned in to a single HGTV show in the last couple of years, you have probably heard the term open floor plan. It’s at the top of almost every homebuyer’s wish list and an exponentially growing custom home trend.

The decline of the living room is a very real thing as more and more people are choosing to incorporate great rooms that combine kitchens and family rooms in their custom home floor plans. This allows plenty of space for everything from homework to entertaining.

In today’s busy world, home living revolves around two things food and television since most American’s spend the majority of their time at home in the kitchen and evolving great room. More often than not, our clients are choosing to center their custom home designs around the great room allowing for large open kitchen space with an informal dining area and the living room all in one. This has made the living room almost obsolete.

A recent NAHB or National Association of Home Builders survey reported that a large portion of respondents expect living rooms to vanish altogether in exchange for the great room. The survey also indicated that mudrooms and formal dining rooms are expected to slowly disappear from new home plans.

What was once considered one of the most important features in a home is now a space that is only occupied once or twice a year. Perhaps, the decline of the living room is due to the economy, which made a lot of consumers more conscious of their finances and home appreciation price or the renewed focus on lowering heating a cooling cost. Either way, with a demographic obsessed with clean lines and modern floor plans we will see the elimination of formal living rooms by 2020.
